About Me

Unraveling the Story behind the Vision.
On March 25, 1972, a baby girl came into the world in Harare, Zimbabwe, Africa. Her mother, a teenager unable to provide for her, made the difficult decision to leave her in the care of her blind grandmother in the rural area of Chihota. Seeking employment as a house help, the mother left for the city.

The grandmother, burdened by her disability, required constant care and attention, leaving the young granddaughter to shoulder all the household responsibilities. As a result, the girl’s school attendance suffered, and her life began to resemble that of a child-headed household.

In this region, child marriages were unfortunately widespread, particularly among girls aged 13 to 16. However, fate took a turn for the better when the girl reached this vulnerable age. A couple approached her grandmother and expressed their desire to help. They took the girl to the city, where they became her sponsors, providing her with secondary and tertiary education. This marked a turning point in her life, as she escaped the challenges faced by adolescent girls in Chihota.

Now, as a grown woman she says, “I am that very girl who was saved from a life filled with hardship. I can testify to the struggles faced by young girls in Chihota every day. Instead of being cared for, they are expected to shoulder the burden of care. Men see them merely as potential housewives, limiting their aspirations and potential.”
In the rural outskirts of Chihota, the significance of educating girls was overlooked. It was widely believed that investing in their education was an exercise in futility, as society deemed their destined path to be that of wives and mothers. This antiquated mindset still prevails today, and it deeply saddened me to witness the shattered aspirations of brilliant young girls forced into marriages with men devoid of ambition. Remarkable and influential women were reduced to tending gardens and toiling on farms after succumbing to teenage motherhood. The consequences of early marriage are etched into my very being, as my own mother found herself confined to the role of a house helper, her dreams shattered.

Having personally endured:

  • The weight of caring for someone who was expected to care for me
  • Being a consequence of a child marriage
  • Embarking on a journey to prove the transformative power of a stranger’s assistance

These experiences propelled me to establish Lily of Valleys Home of Hope, with a steadfast focus on empowering adolescent girls and young women. Our mission is to infuse them with hope, ignite inspiration within their souls, and furnish them with opportunities to pursue their dreams and live a purposeful life, devoid of any form of abuse.
